Is the US too overly involved?

In the midst of the recent spate of international events that has plagued the world and put national security on the line, it has also cast a spotlight on whether the United States has been too overly involved in foreign affairs. So overly involved to the extent that it has neglected its domestic affairs.

The aggression of Russia, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria's (ISIS) invasion of Iraq in a bid to establish an Islamic Caliphate, the Ebola crisis, to its "pivot" to Asia, evidently to counter rising China. The list goes on. Look at the case of ISIS, Barack Obama was the one who orchestrated the air strikes of key militant hideouts. The United States seem to be involved in every international affair we can think of. Yes we do understand, the United States is the world superpower, and the onus is naturally on her to commit her vast amount of resources, be it militarily or diplomatically to resolve international issues. But don't you think the US resources has been overly stretched?

I feel that there is a need to strike a balance and the White House should know where to draw the line. Its citizens are urging the government to reduce its international involvement. In fact, a poll conducted for The Hill revealed that there was an overwhelming number of voters who felt that the United States has been overly involved in foreign affairs, with 72% asserting that US is fighting in too many places. And mind you, it was poll conducted in 2011. Imagine the results if it was conducted today.

Making decisions regarding this, I'm sure that the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan would surely ring a bell in policymakers' heads. The invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan was pretty fruitless, the United States almost 6000 lives in the fight, it has spent almost a trillion to beef up the Iraqi troops who literally crumble in the face of the rapidly advancing ISIS militants. Admittedly, I feel that the United States has wasted too much of its resources on the war.

Should the United States scale down its involvement in foreign affairs? Yes I think they should. Its citizens have loathed its foreign policy. This year's elections saw the Republicans gain the majority for both the Senate and the House of Representatives with many believing that the result was more that the Americans have loss faith in the Democrats than the strength of the Republicans. It was no wonder that people say Obama is more loved internationally than at home.

The US needs to rethink its foreign policy. To prevent further hurt to the US economy and its people, I think the time to do so is now.
